Audacious Prayer

Posted by Roger Hendricks on

On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said, “Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies.

Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the Lord answered such a prayer. Surely the Lord fought for Israel that day! Joshua 10:12-14 NLT

Now I have shared before … this has been the Bible passage, that the skeptical part of my heart has struggled with more than possibly any other passage in the Bible.  When we planned this message series, we thought that this would be a good story of the Bible to read at the beginning of a Vacation Bible School (VBS) focused on Creation!

This past Sunday (and every Sunday throughout June), we will be teaching the children who come to Operation Arctic VBS that everything we can see and even that which we can’t see … every star, every planet, every animal, and every organism was created by the LORD, God Almighty.  And that the God we read about in the Bible created everything out of nothing!  Now this is a difficult pill for some people to swallow … and I understand … that this isn’t necessarily what we see taught in our Postmodern World.

Personally, I believe with all my heart that God created everything out of nothing, and that he not only has the power to create the entire universe in 6 days, but in 6 minutes (if he chose) by simply speaking it into existence.  And yet for some reason, this text has been the most difficult passage for me to get my head wrapped around! …Because it seems so impossible!

In studying for this message, I went back and read different theories on how to understand this Bible passage, and how the LORD could have pulled off this incredible science gravitational-pull defying miracle!  And yet at the end of the day, I come back to the truth that if I believe that the LORD is the one that created the laws of Science, then He can intervene in a miraculous way to allow this miracle to occur!  Why?  Because I believe that God is a God who can do the impossible!

As I contemplated this scene, what is even more amazing than the miracle itself (although that is pretty incredible) is that Joshua had the audacity to pray that something he had never seen happen before … to truly believe that God could do it!  And here is the verse that is really speaking to me … and I hope it will speak to you ... It is verse 14!  When the text says …

There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the Lord answered such a prayer.

Possibly, you and I have limited God working in our lives, because we have limited God far too much … by not asking Big Hairy Audacious Prayers.  You see it is easy to settle for praying only for those things that we can see happening!  It is another thing all together to pray a prayer that you and I can’t see how God is going to work it out … and yet have the audacity to believe that God can intervene in a miraculous way!  Can you think of a situation, a relationship, a challenge, that you have been limiting God by the smallness of your faith?!
