The Promises We Claim

Posted by Roger Hendricks on

As we read from Joshua 14, we will learn not only from Joshua, but from his friend and contemporary… a guy named Caleb as he is also a brilliant example of the importance of remembering God’s promises!

A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua, “Remember what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh-barnea.  I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest report, but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.  So that day Moses solemnly promised me, ‘The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.’”  Joshua 14:6-9 NLT

I love this guy named Caleb… in my opinion Caleb is one of the unsung heroes of the Bible.  He stands as a lasting example of an individual who remembers God’s promises even when it takes years to see them fulfilled!  For Caleb he had waited for 40+ years to see God’s promise through Moses to be fulfilled in his life!  You see the time that we must wait for the promise to be fulfilled does not diminish the strength or the veracity of the promise!

Preparing for this blog post, entitled “The Promises We Claim,” I reached out to SWC Leaders and Friends on Social Media and asked the following question: What specific promise of God is the most important to you on a daily/regular basis?

You see this message (or blog post) isn’t entitled “The Promises I Claim” but “The Promises We Claim!” So I wanted to see what promises some of you remember on a regular basis. It has been encouraging the past couple of days to receive responses from approximately 50 different people.  Here is a sampling of the promises of God remembered by others:

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them … There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:16-18 NIV

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Ps 100:5 NIV

“I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 NRSV

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.  Philippians 1:6 NIV

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.  Psalm 46:1 NLT

“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 NIV

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NIV

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 NRSV

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NRSV

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on the wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 NIV

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” ~Jesus John 14:1-2 NIV

Wow … What a great and faithful God!  Here is my question for you today:

Are you daily/regularly remembering the Promises of God in your life?

You see Caleb never forgot the promises of God … even when he had to wait for 40+ years to see the specific promise of God fulfilled in his life! I have to believe that this is why he stayed so strong and determined in his faith and in his life!!
